New Hampshire to ban landfilling, incineration of e-waste

Dec. 28 -- A statewide ban on sending televisions and computer monitors to New Hampshire landfills and incinerators may have many municipalities scrambling to come up with a recovery solution.

House Bill 1455, which prohibits disposing of video display devices, takes effect July 1. About 60 of the state´s 235 municipalities have electronics collection and recycling programs in place, said state Rep. Suzanne Butcher, who sponsored the bill.

New Hampshire is the fourth state that prohibits the disposal video display devices, such as televisions and computer monitors, in landfills or incinerators. The other states with bans are California, Maine and Massachusetts.

The ban will keep lead and other toxic materials from entering the environment, Butcher said.
